PhD position on Eco-Genetic Modelling of Fish Species

Summary Description:

We are looking for a highly motivated PhD student to conduct research using ecological and genetic (evolutionary) models to investigate how fish stocks in the Black Sea will evolve by 2100 in terms of biomass, abundance, life history traits, and evolutionary dynamics. This research will consider multiple anthropogenic pressures, including climate change and fisheries. The position is funded by the Horizon Europe project “ACTNOW: Advancing Understanding of Cumulative Impacts on European Marine Biodiversity, Ecosystem Functions, and Services for Human Wellbeing” (https://www.actnow-project.eu/).

Responsibilities:

The PhD research project will involve the following tasks:

• Applying eco-genetic modelling to Black Sea fish stocks.

• Conducting simulations to assess the impacts of climate change and fisheries on fish populations using the developed model.

• Collaborating with international scientists within the project consortium.

• Working as part of a multidisciplinary and multinational team.

The student will be supervised by Assoc. Prof. Ekin Akoglu.

Minimum Degree Required:

A Master’ (MS) degree in natural sciences or engineering, such as ecology, oceanography, earth sciences, applied mathematics, any field of engineering or any of the physical, biological, and chemical sciences

Required special knowledge, abilities, and skills:

  • Excellent command of English, both written and oral
  • Familiarity with ecological theory and concepts
  • Command of R or any other high-level programming language (e.g., Phyton, MATLAB, etc.)

Preferred special knowledge, abilities, and skills:

  • Previous experience with mathematical biology
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, within and across departments/functions, managing multiple priorities
  • Creativity and ability to work independently
