Summary Description:

We are seeking highly motivated PhD students to join our Aquatic Ecology (ae-ims.metu.edu.tr) research group at METU IMS. The positions are open in our new project funded by TÜBİTAK 2247-A National Leader Researchers Programme. The project will focus on the effect of extreme events on Mediterranean coastal ecosystems (both freshwater and marine). The ecosystem experiments will be conducted at METU IMS mesocosm facility (ae-ims.metu.edu.tr) as well as using novel in-situ systems on the coastal waters of the campus. The experiments will simulate extreme heat and salinity events and experimental ecosystems will be monitored for its entire structure and function - from biogeochemistry to community structure. Therefore, candidates from a diverse background are encouraged biology, molecular biology, environmental sciences, jeology, chemistry, etc to apply.

 

The candidates will be principally working with Dr. Korhan Özkan (ae-ims.metu.edu.tr) and collaborating with researchers at METU and across a wide international network. The project will be conducted at the Middle East Technical University Mersin Campus (ims.metu.edu.tr) and the PhD Students may enrol graduate programmes at the the Institute of Marine Sciences.

 

The candidates are required to have basic knowledge on aquatic ecosystems. Previous experience in fieldwork and skills in taxonomy (fish, plankton, or a similar aquatic organism group) as well as computational skills (scripting) are a plus.

Minimum Degree Required:

MSc. in biology, ecology, oceanography, earth sciences, applied mathematics, or any of the physical, biological, and chemical sciences. Qualified B.Sc. candidates may apply directly for Ph.D.

Required special knowledge, abilities, and skills:

  • Excellent knowledge of English (written and oral)
  • Basic knowledge on aquatic ecosystems and skills on statistics and scripting.
  • High degree of creativity and flexibility; ability to work under pressure good quantitative and communication skills and ability to work in an interdisciplinary team of various fields

Preferred special knowledge, abilities, and skills:

  • Previous experience in fieldwork and skills in taxonomy (fish, plankton, or a similar aquatic organism group) or computational skills
