Summary Description:

We are seeking a highly motivated MSc student to join our research project titled “Plankton Metabolism and Effects of Mucilage on Oxygen Consumption in the Sea of Marmara” funded by the TÜBİTAK 1001 programme specific for “Mucilage research” focusing on the Sea of Marmara mucilage event. The Scholar will be principally working with Dr. Mustafa Mantıkcı
(ims.metu.edu.tr/people/mantikci-mustafa-dr) as well as collaborating with researchers across a wide international network.

The project will be conducted at the Middle East Technical University Institute of Marine Sciences (METU-IMS) at METU Erdemli Campus (ims.metu.edu.tr/).

Scholarship on experimental and field plankton metabolism and oxygen dynamics in the Sea of Marmara. The tasks involved in this project are:

  • Conducting plankton respiration and primary production experiments using OPTODES (Fiber optic oxygen sensors)
  • Participating 2 weeks cruise at the Sea of Marmara with R/V Bilim-2.
  • Conduct laboratory analyses (Dissolved oxygen, Chlorophyll, POC, Nutrients).

METU - Institute of Marine Sciences (Mersin)

Minimum Degree Required:
  • Bachelor's degree in a science, engineering or related field or
  • Being master student on related field at METU or another university

Required special knowledge, abilities, and skills:
  • Basic knowledge on aquatic ecosystems and statistical skills

Preferred special knowledge, abilities, and skills:
  • Previous experience in experimental studies and/or fieldwork
  • Preferable skills in R or SAS computational programming

Please note that since the project has officially started, you can;
1. apply for being a master student for the next semester at METU-IMS (This term, you can start as a Special Student, then next term you can apply for master. Applications for being a special student will be held between the dates Oct 11-18, 2021), or
2. be a scholarship holder in this project with the condition of working full-time (physically) at the METU-IMS for the next 9 months if you are doing postgraduate research in this field at METU or another university.
