Summary Description:

We are seeking a highly motivated Ph.D. researcher to join our young and dynamic team at the Institute of Marine Sciences, Middle East Technical University, located in the METU's seashore marine science campus in Erdemli, Turkey. The researcher will be working with Assoc. Prof. Dr. Mustafa Yücel and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Bettina Fach on the oceanographic and biogeochemical studies (including biogeochemical modelling) of the Black Sea.  The selected candidate will be a part of both the multidisciplinary redox biogeochemistry and ecosystem modelling research groups. The position will be a part of TUBITAK-funded research project focusing on the oceanography, biogeochemistry and redox-dependent ecosystem functioning of the Black Sea. The Ph.D. student will be enrolled to the IMS Oceanography graduate degree program.

 

The tasks involved in the Ph.D. research project includes the following and can be extended depending on the candidate's interests and background:

- Participate in research expeditions in the Black Sea and conduct biogeochemical sampling and analyses

- Develop existing mathematical models of Black Sea biogeochemistry and interpret model outputs

- Advance the understanding of Black Sea's unique redox biogeochemical cycles and as such contribute to a broader assessment of Black Sea ecosystems

Minimum Degree Required:

MSc. in oceanography, chemistry and geochemistry, earth sciences, applied mathematics, earth system sciences, all engineering departments and any of the physical, biological, and chemical sciences. Qualified B.Sc. candidates may apply directly for Ph.D.

Required special knowledge, abilities, and skills:
  • Excellent knowledge of English (written and oral)
  • Basic knowledge on cycles in aquatic ecosystems and skills on statistics and scripting.
  • High degree of creativity and flexibility; ability to work under pressure good quantitative and communication skills and ability to work in an interdisciplinary team of various fields

Preferred special knowledge, abilities, and skills:
  • Previous experience in fieldwork and computational skills

Additional Information:               

The stipend is initially for 2 years with possibility of extension.
