Summary Description:

METU-IMS is currently coordinating the EU funded projects Black Sea CONNECT and BRIDGE-BS, and involved in Black Sea related projects DOORS and ARSINOE, which all aim to contribute to a resilient, health and climate-neutral Black Sea and a sustainable blue economy.

The postdoctoral fellow will primarily take responsibilities in forming the bridge from science to blue economy and sustainability policies in the Black Sea in the frame of these EU projects. The fellow will particularly take part in the Implementation Plan development of the Black Sea Strategic Research and Innovation Agenda and its policy level implementation via different EU and national projects.  The fellow will translate the science outputs to policy design and links to broader policies such as the Common Maritime Agenda of the Black Sea, the European Green Deal, EU Mission on Restoring Oceans and Seas, UN Decade of Sustainable Development.

METU-IMS is the leading international marine science institute in Turkey with a 100% English education and research.  All METU-IMS faculty engage in teaching, research and service. The Institute carries out research on the Eastern Mediterranean as well as on the Aegean, Black Seas, and Turkish Straits System. The long-term vision of METU-IMS is to integrate fundamental research, blue growth solutions and public outreach towards the overall goal of sustainable management of aquatic ecosystems based on excellent science.

This is a 1-year full-time position extendable to 3 years with an expected start date in Spring 2022.

The candidate will be based at the seashore-based METU-IMS campus, located in Mersin, Turkey and involved in the institute's international and EU H2020 projects.

Responsibilities:

  • Maintain an excellent knowledge of current EU policy activities in the field of marine sciences, blue economy, European Green Deal, Missions
  • Oversee METU'S own policy activities in EU projects and METU's involvement in joint policy activities
  • Contribute to the organization of policy-related project activities, deliverables and milestones
  • Provide input to the policy-related reports of the project
  • Liaise with the policy-oriented partners of the projects
  • Engage policy stakeholders in project activities
  • Providing support to policy-related briefs, concept notes, meeting outputs

Minimum Degree Required:

PhD degree in oceanography and marine policy, international relations, sustainable development, Earth System Sciences or related fields. Marine science background is a plus, but not a strict requirement.

Required special knowledge, abilities, and skills:

  • experience or interest in sustainability, environmental science/management, or a related discipline
  • Minimum of 3-year relevant experience in a similar role in an international or EU project
  • Excellent level of English. Other languages of Black Sea littoral countries are a big plus.
  • Excellent teamwork capability
  • Ability to travel in Turkey and abroad
  • Military obligations fulfilled where applicable
