Summary Description:

In frame of newly launched EU H2020 projects BRIDGE-BS, DOORS and ARSINOE focusing on oceanography, blue economy and climate change in the Black Sea, the postdoctoral fellow will conduct 3D modelling of the coupled physical, biogeochemical and ecosystem properties of the Black Sea and analyse simulation results for the different needs of the projects to produce science-supported blue economy and climate adaptation pathways in the Black Sea region.   

The candidate will be embedded in the highly dynamic and diverse Ecosystem Modelling working group of METU-IMS. The group already has functioning 1D and 3D models of the Black Sea Ecosystem. The candidate is also expected to collaborate with the seagoing scientists and participate in research expeditions in the Black Sea.

This is a 1-year full-time position extendable to 3 years in case of satisfactory performance with an expected start date in as soon as possible Spring 2022).

The candidate will be based at the seashore-based METU-IMS campus, located in Mersin, Turkey and involved in the institute's international and EU H2020 projects.

METU-IMS is the leading international marine science institute in Turkey with a 100% English education and research.  All METU-IMS faculty engage in teaching, research and service. The Institute carries out research on the Eastern Mediterranean as well as on the Aegean, Black Seas, and Turkish Straits System. The long-term vision of METU-IMS is to integrate fundamental research, blue growth solutions and public outreach towards the overall goal of sustainable management of aquatic ecosystems based on excellent science.

Responsibilities:

  • Maintain and improve the 3D ecosystem and biogeochemical modelling framework of the Black Sea
  • Produce simulation results in line with the plan of BRIDGE-BS, DOORS and ARSINOE projects.
  • Participate in Black Sea research expeditions when needed.

Minimum Degree Required:

PhD degree in Oceanography, Environmental Engineering and Sciences, Ecological Modelling or related programs of higher education institutions.

Required special knowledge, abilities, and skills:

  • Required skills and expertise in ecosystem modelling, including excellent preparation in Fortran, C++, Python and related software packages typically used in oceanography.
  • Basic level understanding of machine-learning approaches
  • Desirable but not essential - experience or interest in sustainability, environmental science/management, or a related discipline
  • Minimum of 3-year relevant experience in a similar role in an international or EU project
  • Excellent level of English. Other languages are a plus.
  • Excellent teamwork capability
  • Ability to travel in Turkey and abroad
  • Military obligations fulfilled (where applicable)

  • Strong attention to detail
