Summary Description:

METU-IMS currently leads and partners in a suite of EU-funded Black Sea projects, such as Black Sea CONNECT, BRIDGE-BS and ARSINOE, where scientific research of the Black Sea will be developed for a healthy, resilient ecosystems and sustainable blue economy. Within these, ARSINOE's case study (CS) Black Sea specifically aims to connect climate change scenarios in the Western Black Sea to regional socioeconomic pathways and systemic innovation solutions. The postdoctoral fellow will be responsible for the CS on behalf of IMS and will also contribute to the Institute's increasing role in connecting marine science with climate change socioeconomics and innovation in the Black Sea, Marmara and the Mediterranean.  

METU-IMS is the leading international marine science institute in Turkey with a 100% English education and research.  All METU-IMS faculty engage in teaching, research and service. The Institute carries out research on the Eastern Mediterranean as well as on the Aegean, Black Seas, and Turkish Straits System. The long-term vision of METU-IMS is to integrate fundamental research, blue growth solutions and public outreach towards the overall goal of sustainable management of aquatic ecosystems based on excellent science.

This is a 1-year full-time position, with extension up to 3 years in case of satisfactory performance, with an expected start date in Spring 2022

The candidate will be based at the seashore-based METU-IMS campus, located in Mersin, Turkey.

Responsibilities:

  • Connect oceanographic science with climate-socioeconomics and develop climate innovation pathways for the Black Sea region building on existing and to be generated IMS scientific outputs in different projects.
  • Take part in climate change related meetings in ARSINOE as well as BRIDGE-BS projects.
  • Lead the drafting and submission of deliverables and contribute to project management

Minimum Degree Required:

PhD degree in climate sciences, environmental sciences, oceanography, sustainable development or Earth System Sciences. Marine science background is a plus, but not a strict requirement.

Required special knowledge, abilities, and skills:

  • Essential mindset for multidisciplinary frontier research
  • Essential experience or interest in sustainability, environmental science/management, or a related discipline
  • Minimum of 3-year relevant experience in a similar role in an international or EU project
  • Excellent level of English. Other languages are a plus.
  • Excellent teamwork capability
  • Ability to travel in Turkey and abroad
  • Military obligations fulfilled where applicable

  • Demonstrated ability to successfully work in a fast-paced environment, within and across departments/functions, managing multiple priorities
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Creativity thinking through new ideas and approaches
