MARMOD Phase II Marmara Sea Integrated Modeling System

Funding Scheme:

T.R. Ministry of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change

Type:

National

Coordinator Organisation:

METU-IMS

Contact Point:

Prof. Dr. Barış Salihoğlu

Duration:

32 Months

Start-End Date:

2021-2023

Aim:

With the MARMOD Phase II Project, it is aimed to gradually reduce the land-based nutrient loads that can enable the marine ecosystem to reach good quality again in Marmara with the help of more comprehensively developed three-dimensional models (physical, biogeochemical and ecosystem) supported by new data and observations.

In addition, a Marmara Digital Twin will be created, which will include data, model results and advanced analysis techniques such as artificial intelligence.

Oceanographic Early Warning System for Mucilage

Funding Scheme:

TÜBİTAK 1001 Mucilage

Type:

National

Coordinator Organisation:

METU-IMS

Contact Point:

Asst. Prof. Devrim Tezcan

Duration:

9Months

Start-End Date:

2021-2022

Aim:

The aim of this project is to establish an observation network with low-cost buoy systems to be installed in 5 selected regions in the Marmara Sea, to monitor long-term and sudden temperature changes in the water column and other oceanographic parameters such as salinity, dissolved oxygen and pH and to follow up the sudden changes in these data.

With the interface to be created, sudden changes in oceanographic parameters will be determined and a warning will be issued.

The effect of plankton metabolism and mucilage on oxygen consumption in the Sea of Marmara.

Funding Scheme:

TÜBİTAK 1001 Mucilage

Type:

National

Coordinator Organisation:

METU-IMS

Contact Point:

Dr. Mustafa Mantıkçı

Duration:

9 Months

Start-End Date:

2021-2022

Aim:

The aim of this study is to investigate the oxygen decrease that can be caused by the mucilage formed in the spring-summer of 2021 in the Marmara Sea by increasing the oxygen consumption in the water column, with experimental and on-site measurements, to establish a connection between the production and consumption of oxygen in the sea and environmental variables, and to try to understand the oxygen balance.

Integrated Marine Pollution Monitoring Program 2020-2023- MEDITERRANEAN

Funding Scheme:

T.R. Ministry of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change

Type:

National

Coordinator Organisation:

TÜBİTAK-MAM

Contact Point:

Prof. Dr. Barış Salihoğlu

Duration:

52 Months

Start-End Date:

2020-2023

Aim:

With the Integrated Pollution Monitoring Program, the physicochemical characteristics of Turkish seas and coastal waters, their components and indicators that will reflect the ecological status, pollution status and radioactivity levels, seagrass, seabed biodiversity and target species for economic fisheries and their pollutant levels will be monitored.

In addition, for marine solid waste, microplastics, marine litter, and beach litter, which are indicators in the Marine Strategy Framework Directive, will be studied.

The status of coastal water bodies and marine areas will be evaluated by making a quality classification with the results obtained.

Determination of the place of groundwater transports in the water and nutrient budget of the Cilician Basin by observation, radioisotope and modeling studies

Funding Scheme:

TÜBİTAK 1001

Type:

National

Coordinator Organisation:

METU-IMS

Contact Point:

Asst. Prof. Korhan Özkan

Duration:

36 Months

Start-End Date:

2021-2024

Aim:

With this project, it is aimed to determine the place of SGD in the water budget of the Cilicia Basin by using the 228Ra radioisotope trace element. Groundwater accumulates the 228Ra isotope as it passes through the earth's crust. 228Ra is transported to the sea by groundwater, and after reaching the sea, 228Ra is a very productive indicator for revealing the SGD water budget, as it decreases only by radioactive decay and water circulation. The findings obtained in the project will be evaluated comparatively and strategies will be put forward for more efficient management of our coastal and marine areas on a larger scale together with the Cilicia Basin within the basin interaction.
