Summary Description:

We are seeking a highly motivated postdoctoral researcher to join our research team at METU-IMS. The position will be funded from MARMOD Project (Integrated Modelling System for the Marmara Sea) and conduct research principally on catchment-sea interactions around the Marmara & Black Sea but also on the other systems (for example Göksu Catchment in Mersin). The researchers will be working with Dr. Korhan Özkan (okorhan@metu.edu.tr) and Dr. Barış Salihoğlu.

METU-IMS is the leading international marine science institute in Turkey with a 100% English education and research.  All METU-IMS faculty engage in teaching, research and service. The Institute carries out research on the Eastern Mediterranean as well as on the Aegean, Black Seas, and Turkish Straits System. The long-term vision of METU-IMS is to integrate fundamental research, blue growth solutions and public outreach towards the overall goal of sustainable management of aquatic ecosystems based on excellent science.

This is a 2-year full-time position with an expected start date in Spring 2022 (as soon as possible).

The candidate will be based at the seashore-based METU-IMS campus, located in Mersin, Turkey.

Responsibilities:

  • Investigate catchment-sea interactions using analyses of long-term datasets and catchment modelling tools (for example SWAT)
  • Collaborate with a diverse group of scientists on MARMOD project and deliver project related reports in collaboration with others
  • Help with supervising a PhD student project on catchment ecology and modelling
  • Participate in regular fieldworks for Marmara Sea as well as other pilot research sites

Minimum Degree Required:

PhD in any relevant scientific area for water resources management, environmental management and aquatic sciences. Experience in catchment modelling tools (like SWAT) and fieldwork on natural systems is preferred.

Required special knowledge, abilities, and skills:

  • Research experience in both aquatic ecology and statistical/modelling approaches
  • Excellent level of English
  • Ability to handle multiple projects at a given time and to establish and meet deadlines in a productive manner
  • Excellent teamwork capability
  • Ability to travel in Turkey and abroad

Preferred special knowledge, abilities, and skills:

  • Skills in SWAT
  • Background experience in fieldwork
