Summary Description:

METU-IMS is the leading international marine science institute in Turkey with a 100% English education and research.  All METU-IMS faculty engage in teaching, research and service. The Institute carries out research on the Eastern Mediterranean as well as on the Aegean, Black Seas, and Turkish Straits System. The long-term vision of METU-IMS is to integrate fundamental research, blue growth solutions and public outreach towards the overall goal of sustainable management of aquatic ecosystems based on excellent science.

 

METU-IMS is now looking for a communication officer with strong graphic design skills who ideally also has science background and experience in communicating scientific topics through film, video, written word or art, who are confident using the web, multimedia and social media tools and have a passion for sharing the excitement of science with the general public. It is also advantageous to be flexible, adventurous, with good team work skills. This is a 2-year full-time position with an expected start date as soon as the position is filled.

 

The candidate will be based at the seashore-based METU-IMS campus, located in Mersin, Turkey and involved in communication and dissemination activities of institute's international and EU H2020 projects.

Responsibilities:

  • Coordinate the process of development of content and visibility materials (promotional items, infographics, brochure, booklets, thematic area fact sheets, presentations, newsletters, video spots, images and so on).
  • Help to maintain web content and implementation of social media strategies. Content creation for social media, e-newsletters, websites and web versions of printed materials.
  • Provide photo, video and social media support during events, meetings with stakeholders, maintain a digital media library and media releases.
  • Offer administrative support to projects and in-house teams.
  • Draft and edit communications copy (e.g. press releases, publications, social media posts) and perform proof-reading

Minimum Degree Required:

B.Sc. degree in Communication & Design, Journalism, Media, Public Relations or another related field. Scientific background is a plus.  Marine science background is asset.

Required special knowledge, abilities, and skills:
  • Strong editing and researching skills.
  • Outstanding communication (oral and written) skills in English.
  • Strong organization skills and detail-oriented.
  • Minimum of 1-year relevant experience in a similar role
  • Ability to handle multiple projects at a given time and to establish and meet deadlines in a productive manner
  • Excellent teamwork capability
  • Ability to travel in Turkey and abroad
  • Ability to relocate to Mersin

Preferred special knowledge, abilities, and skills:
  • Scientific background is a plus.  Marine science background is asset.
  • Experience with video storyboarding, filming, editing and sharing through other digital platforms and assets is preferred
  • Proficiency in web content-management system, graphic design (Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, InDesign), video and photo editing tools, social media platforms
  • Knowledge of science communication principles, media, and public education techniques
  • Experience with Social Media Management is an asset.
  • Experience in conducting awareness & outreach activities and educational activities is desirable.
