Summary Description:

METU-IMS is the leading international marine science institute in Turkey with a 100% English education and research.  All METU-IMS faculty engage in teaching, research and service. The Institute carries out research on the Eastern Mediterranean as well as on the Aegean, Black Seas, and Turkish Straits System. The long-term vision of METU-IMS is to integrate fundamental research, blue growth solutions and public outreach towards the overall goal of sustainable management of aquatic ecosystems based on excellent science.
METU-IMS is now looking for a communication specialist with a science background and experience in communicating scientific topics through film, video, written word or art, who are confident using the web, multimedia and social media tools and have a passion for sharing the excitement of science with the general public. It is also advantageous to be flexible, adventurous, with good team work skills. This is a 3-year full time position with an expected start date in November 2019. 
The candidate will be based at the seashore-based METU-IMS campus, located in Mersin, Turkey, and involved in communication and dissemination activities of institute's international and EU H2020 projects.

• Working directly with the project management team on a daily basis, in order to follow up closely any dissemination event (initiative meetings, European events, partners’ national events).
• In cooperation with the METU-IMS outreach team and project-specific communication experts, develop, coordinate and/or implement the overall concepts and content of electronic communications and outreach efforts. Products include multimedia-integrated exhibits, multimedia productions, social media, e-newsletters, websites and web versions of printed materials. Solicit faculty and administrative input. Write and edit text in style appropriate to intended audience. Work closely with graphic designers, writer and production coordinators to integrate graphics and textual elements, set production schedule, meet deadlines and review proofs.
• Preparation of the content and organisation of publication of communication and visibility materials (promotional items, infographics, brochure, booklets, thematic area fact sheets, presentations, newsletters, video spots, images and so on).
• Development and regular update of a dissemination, communication and exploitation plan for international and EU H2020 projects.
• Implement a robust, effective social media presence for projects in cooperation with the METU-IMS outreach team and project-specific communication experts. Think strategically and apply market techniques to increase visibility, boost traffic, and engage with constituents and measure impact of efforts. Platforms include Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and YouTube. Track and report analytics, demonstrating the effectiveness of ongoing campaigns.
• Conducting projects’ awareness & outreach activities in cooperation with the METU-IMS outreach team and project-specific communication experts.
• Contribution to development and implementation of the educational activities and trainings of projects
• Provide photo, video and social media support during events, meetings with stakeholders, maintain a digital media library and media releases.

Minimum Degree Required:

  • B.Sc. degree in Communication & Design, Journalism, Media, Public Relations or another related field. Marine science background is a plus, but not a strict requirement

Required special knowledge, abilities, and skills:

  • Excellent level of English. Other languages are a plus.
  • Knowledge of science communication principles, media, and public education techniques
  • Ability to handle multiple projects at a given time and to establish and meet deadlines in a productive manner
  • Knowledge of proofreading and appropriate style guides
  • Proficiency in web content-management system, graphic design, video and photo editing tools, social media platforms
  • Excellent teamwork capability 
  • Ability to travel in Turkey and abroad
  • Experience in developing science-related digital communications efforts for non-science populations or the general public is preferred.
  • Experience with video storyboarding, filming, editing and sharing through other digital platforms and assets is preferred
  • Awareness and knowledge of local and regional environmental topics are preferred

Additional Information:               

The position is initially for 1 year and the contract can be extended up to 3 years based on the performance of the candidate.
